Clare Valley SCA Gourmet Week ready to celebrate 40th anniversary this month

Clare Valley SCA Gourmet Week (Gourmet) is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, and with Clare Valley accommodation options filling up, the Clare Valley Racing Club has trotted in to save the day with a new tent camping alternative.

Offering double and single stretcher foam beds for their new and unique tent city, the Clare Valley Racecourse’s Bell Tents are available during the Festival Weekend for a two or three night stay so that guests can really immerse themselves in the first weekend of Gourmet.

To mark the festival’s 40th anniversary, a special Clare Valley Wine Hall of Fame Gala Dinner and Awards Presentation will be held at O’Leary Walker Wines on the evening of Friday 24 May, whereby the: Rising Star, Viticulturist, Regional Ambassador and Winemaker will be awarded, and Legends will be inducted into the Clare Valley Wine Hall of Fame.

Occurring only once a decade, tickets to the Hall of Fame Gala Dinner and Awards Presentation are now on sale to the general public.

The biggest part of Gourmet Week is the Festival Weekend, and to make sure everyone stays safe on the roads, Clare Valley has organised a Shuttle Bus route to transport guests around the wine region to different events and experiences. With buses leaving from Adelaide, Elizabeth and Gawler before the Clare Valley region loop starts, the Shuttle Bus is the most convenient way for guests to make the most of the first weekend.

Gourmet Ambassador, Nick Ryan, one of Australia’s leading wine writers said that this festival is the original and the best.

“I spend my life travelling to the greatest wine regions across the globe, and there is only one that I choose to call home. The Clare Valley is quintessentially Australian and a special part of the world. The wineries here consistently deliver phenomenal wine and Gourmet Week is a great opportunity to experience everything this region has to offer, and I can guarantee you will have a great time doing it,” he said.

The 10-day festival can be enjoyed in three parts; Festival Weekend (17-19 May), Breathe It In (20-24 May) and Land of the Long Lunch (25-26 May), whether that be for a day, weekend or over the whole week.

The Festival Weekend stays true to its roots of being the biggest, most popular part of the 10-day festival. Claymore Wines are bringing back an afternoon of chilled live music to warm you up for the rest of the week with Friday Arvo Fire Night on the first day of Gourmet only. The UPPside Restaurant are hosting award-winning Chef Christian Uppill to cater European street food and gourmet Italian pizzas with their new event The UPPside’s Euro Street Food & Pizza e Vino Event.

Next up, immerse yourself in the region’s unique beauty with the Breathe It In series of events. Reillys Wines are excited to be bringing their new event Reillys Wine Lunches to the festival, where guests can enjoy a relaxed Artisan Board lunch and a couple of glasses of wine. Drop in to Greg Cooley Wines to Meet the Makers, Greg Cooley and Kelli Shanahan themselves, for a unique and intimate tasting with this boutique winery’s founding family.

Last but not least, the Land of the Long Lunch concludes the week of Gourmet festivities. Enjoy long lunches across the region in unique and familiar settings, like Taylor Wines’ Autumn Long Lunch, where guests will be served a stunning four-course menu paired with award-winning wines. Along with the Valley’s countless long lunches on offer, celebrate Matriarch and Rogue Winery’s 10th anniversary with their Cellar Door Tasting at their new winery location in Mintaro.

Hon. Zoe Bettison MP, Minister for Tourism and Multicultural Affairs, welcomed guests to Gourmet Week and applauded the festival’s efforts on driving rural tourism.

“The demand for the event is fantastic, and now even more visitors can linger longer to enjoy the festivities over the first weekend thanks to additional accommodation on offer,” she said. “Events like this help drive demand, bolster the region’s profile and build pride across the local community and I am very proud to support it through the Regional Event Fund.”

The festival’s 40th anniversary also coincides with the 50th anniversary of two well known and loved wine businesses; Knappstein Wines and Mitchell Wines. Their events over Gourmet week will be especially celebratory, with Mitchell Wines having played a key role in the very first Gourmet 40 years ago.

Clare Valley SCA Gourmet Week is presented by the Clare Valley Wine & Grape Association. This event would not be possible without the generous support: of principal partner, Southern Cross Austereo (SCA); major event partner, the South Australian Tourism Commission (SATC) and Clare Valley Gilbert Valleys Council; with support from our corporate friends, Logic Films, Honeycomb Design, Blis Web Agency, RAA and littlelion PR.
